We will be using a mat for training a running dog walk as this is the method we have seen gives the most reliable results. Training the dog to run through the mat with split back feet, if done thoroughly, leads to good rates of success. Two types of mat are useful: one that will lay flat on the floor to start with & a second that can be strapped securely to the dog walk plank later on. There are several suppliers but those pictured are great quality & robust. You can make your own by cutting down a yoga mat but you must ensure it doesn’t lift or move as this will put off some dogs causing them to avoid the mat - the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve! Choose a length appropriate to your dogs stride: 50cm long would be a minimum & suitable for most small/medium dogs. Longer striding large dogs may well need a longer 60-65cm mat.

Rewards are crucial & you will need to be able to differentiate between a ‘good’ hit & a ‘jackpot’ hit with your verbals & reward. A remote method allowing you to reward ahead/behind you is also very important. You can use a manners minder, treat balls, toys (if they can be trusted to leave it on the ground if they don’t hit the contact as desired). It all depends on what works for each individual dog. Plan your reward structure before you start! Many people will use a clicker but this can be hard timing wise as it’s tricky enough seeing a good hit without then also having to hit the clicker!

Further down the line you will need a non-slip plank you can lay flat on the floor or on a slight angle. It needs to be strong enough to take the weight of the dog, be non-slip and not have a big lip at the end. Eventually will need access to a full dog walk that can be adjusted height wise. You will need regular sessions on the dog walk to build muscle memory & consistency so again, plan how you are going to ensure you can do this before you start.

So, get your kit together, draw up a plan for your reward system & if you need to train a toy leave cue or chat up a friend for access to their dog walk or just to help you with this process, now’s the time!

Working Spot Members: Remember to let us know via the Facebook Group when you’ve got yourself organised equipment wise & have decided on your cue & reward systems. We can then talk through any concerns or potential problems before you start 😊

If you wish to use an alternative method of training your dogwalk we are happy to support you & provide feedback & help with your journey via your videos. Jo & Jayne both have experience using stride regulators & hoops with varying amounts of success.
